Chanda’s Story

Chanda Kapesa is from the Democratic Rebublic of Congo. He and his family came to Rochdale in 2006, from a refugee camp in Zambia, under the UK Gateway Programme. Mr Kapesa was a teacher by profession in his home country.

When his grandson joined started primary school, Mr Kapesa was invited to attend the family literacy course provided by Family Learning Service. During the course, he volunteered to work in different classrooms. He then went on to undertake another family learning course, ‘Helping in Schools’ and has now been appointed as a teaching assistant.
