Family learning to employment

Gaynor's Story

Gaynor has two secondary school age children. She joined family learning non-accredited courses for literacy and numeracy in 2004 with her youngest child. She progressed onto accredited courses, and expressed an interest in becoming a Teaching Assistant in the local schools. She was subsequently welcomed onto the ACL Teaching Assistant level 2 embedded SFL and, on completion of this course, joined the Skills For Life ‘Move On’ course in literacy, gaining a level 2 pass.

Gaynor went on to work voluntarily, supporting the delivery of family learning programmes in her children’s school. After receiving advice and guidance through the programme, she used her portfolio as evidence to gain entry onto a level 3 course: Child Care Learning and Development. Gaynor continued working voluntary for the school and used this as her placement.

Gaynor has recently gained employment in a local school as Teaching Assistant, and is continuing with her studies.
