Paul's Story

Paul and his wife signed up for a 6-10 week ‘Keeping up with the Children’ Numeracy programme last Autumn term. Paul was very nervous, as learning Maths brought back painful experiences from his time at school. Ten weeks later he sat L1 Adult Numeracy and passed. After a further ten weeks, he sat L1 Adult Literacy and passed that too. At this point he started exploring a new career, and asked for advice about how to set up a new business as an electrician.

Paul was interested in helping to recruit more parents and carers onto the programme. He was invited to speak to the parents of new Reception children’s parents at his son’s old infant school. Before a large audience of parents he gave a brief outline of his learning journey, received a resounding ovation and by the end of the evening had recruited 12 parents. A repeat performance at an induction evening at his son’s junior school recruited 15 parents for this Autumn term.

Paul is now discovering previously untapped skill and imagination through a creative writing course, set up by the Adult Learning Service, at the request of learners, to contextualise Literacy learning.
