Screening Tools and Diagnostic Assessment

Screening and Diagnostic assessment lets the learner and those working with the learner identify a starting point, and develop a learning plan.

  • Screening identifies people who might benefit from language, literacy and numeracy support or teaching. It can be carried out by non-specialists, including VCS Staff. The Fast Track Assessment Pack is available from Basic Skills Agency (code A1244, £5.50) 0870 600 2400

  • Initial Assessment assesses starting levels and identifies appropriate learning opportunities and is done by Specialist Teaching Staff. The Initial Assessment pack, available from Basic Skills Agency (code A328, £17.00) and Target Skills from Cambridge Training and Development 01223 470480 are two good tools for this.

  • Diagnostic Assessment identifies skills and weaknesses and develops the individual learning plan. Diagnostic Assessment materials in Literacy, Numeracy and ESOL are available from the DfES 0845 60 222 60.  www.dfes.gov.uk/readwriteplus

  • A useful set of documents is provided in Planning Learning and Recording Achievement, DfES, 2003. Available from 0845 60 222 60 ref: PLRA1. For an interactive version go to www.dfes.gov.uk/readwriteplus
