Case Study: Maureen

A gentle approach to literacy...

The massage and aromatherapy course runs for 20 hours and has a simple subject specific aim - to introduce the skills and knowledge required to be able to carry out a simple fluent massage sequence with relevant oils in a safe manner. The photograph shows learners practising a hand massage.

The literacy skills taught in the embedded programme are:

  • listening and responding to spoken language.
  • speaking to communicate.
  • engaging in discussion.
  • reading and understanding relevant pieces of text.
  • comparing text types.
  • writing to convey information.

The group is a vibrant one. The eight learners, most of whom would not have considered joining a course to improve any of the literacy skills listed, but were strongly attracted to the subject of massage technique and safe use of oils. They are keen to try out their skills on family and friends and enjoyed practising on each other during the course sessions. They are working at Entry Level 3 in the National Standards for adult literacy and all express interest in further courses once the current one ends in December 2002.

The class held at the Wykeham Centre in Romford market place and recruitment has been through a “Learning Freeway” market stall.
