Case Study: Pauline

Pauline is 24 years old. She left school at 16 with modest GCSE grades. She briefly started a college course, but dropped out after one term. She has never had a job and has no work experience. Around the time that Pauline started secondary school, she was diagnosed with a sight problem. She is now registered as partially sighted and her vision is slowly worsening.

When Pauline was at school she was supported by a number of agencies including the LEA sensory support team and social services. She no longer has contact with any of these professionals.
Pauline lives at home with her parents and elder brother. She doesn’t go out very much. She likes to watch TV and stays in. She has had mobility training previously, but doesn’t go out much on her own. Pauline has a white symbol cane, but she doesn’t use it very often as she doesn’t like people to know that she has sight difficulties.
Pauline often relies on her dad and her brother to give her lifts. She won’t use public transport unless she has to. She has lost touch with her friends from school, but her brother sometimes takes her to the pub and she always looks forward to this.

Pauline says that she wants to work. She has applied for lots of jobs, but she never seems to get an interview. She wouldn’t mind working in a call centre. She has heard that this is a job that visually impaired people can do.
