Case Study: Sharon

Sharon is a single mum in her 30s. She has two children; one of her Sons, aged eleven, has learning difficulties. She missed opportunities in her early education and joined the Flexi Centre in 1997 to study English with LT. Before starting this course she had no previous experience of working on a computer. Since this time, she has been working her way through all the current IT workbooks and has gained college certificates for her work. Sharon is a motivated student who mainly works at her own pace. Her progress is mapped through the curriculum using the structure of the IT books.

Since joining the Centre, Sharon has additionally enrolled on both English and Maths sessions. She is now working at Entry Level 3 to Level 1. Her confidence and self have greatly improved through her learning process and she now uses her own strategies and techniques to help her son at home with both his English and his speech difficulties.
Recently Sharon has been helping in an English class as a student volunteer. She has grown into this role and is welcomed into the classroom as a well-liked member of the student group. She is interested in working towards a Certificate in Basic Skills to work as a volunteer tutor. Sharon also sees her future progression leading her towards a qualification in childcare or animal care, If Sharon was to take this route, this could be assisted by additional basic skills support through the Study Centre.
