Learning and Skills for People Experiencing Mental Health DifficultiesA briefing sheet by Kathryn JamesProject Status: Completed People experiencing mental health difficulties are often under represented in further education. This briefing sheet shows that there is a need to have adequate provision for people with mental health difficulties and how to go about developing such provision. There is no such thing as a typical learner with mental health difficulties. It is important for providers of learning opportunities to recognise the wide range of abilities and needs of people with mental health difficulties. Building good partnership working between education and mental health services ensures that potential learners with mental health difficulties hear about the range of provision on offer and can be supported to make the initial contact with a learning provider. The Local Learning and Skills Councils have an important role in facilitating local collaboration and partnership working between learning providers and mental health services. The briefing sheet ends with action points which the Learning and Skills Councils could pursue in order to ensure learning opportunities are more inclusive for people with mental health difficulties.
