Workplace Learning

IT technicianMost adults say that their workplace is the best place for them to learn. They respond to opportunities to help them do their jobs better, whether that training is learned on the job or through formal courses. It is a familiar and comfortable place for them to learn. Adult learners are also more motivated workers if they feel that they are being invested in with learning opportunities or skills training.

The biggest cost to a business is usually staffing and it is imperative for business success to find ways of increasing competence. Adult learning is one of the tools you can use to help develop your staff and maintain their effectiveness.

Addressing skills gaps is a key part of the government’s agenda. The 2007 Comprehensive Spending Review outlined an expansion of Apprenticeships, a doubling of the Train to Gain budget and a continuation of the investment in the Skills for Life strategy. In this year’s budget, the Chancellor also announced an additional £60M of funding over the next three years for adult skills. However, there is an expectation that employers will play their part and sometimes it is not easy for employees to get the most out of training or to respond to training introduced by the employer. At NIACE, we can provide a variety of services and resources to help you meet this challenge.
